A Hypothesis and Evidence That Mercury May be an Etiological Factor in Alzheimer’s Disease
The cause of Alzheimer’s disease [AD] has been one of the great medical mysteries since Alois Alzheimer first identified this disease in 1906. It is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, affecting 4.2 million citizens. Although recent studies have shown a decline in incidence, it is still one of the most unmet challenges of our age . The worldwide dementia prevalence is over 44 million people, with an annual cost of 604 billion USD. It is estimated that the worldwide prevalence will triple to 135.5 million by 2050. At least 30% to 50% of all individuals above the age of 85 are affected by AD in the industrialized countries . Approximately three to five percent of all cases have a genetic factor . Many researchers believe that some environmental factor is responsible for the etiology of Alzheimer’s disease.
